REPORT ON:
JAKOPIČ GALLERY
INTRODUCTION:
This report is written by the group ŠLAPI and aims to present the Jakopič Gallery, which we have recently visited during the school excursion to Celje and Ljubljana.
The outstanding gallery is located in the heart of Ljubljana, close to the Ljubljanica river.
THE MOST IMPRESSIVE ASPECT OF THE JAKOPIČ GALLERY:
The most thrilling aspect of the Jakopič Gallery was the theme of everyday life under the Mafia influence, which was reflected in all the photos of the current exhibition. It was fascinating yet at the same time slightly disturb-ing, as some photos were quite graphic. We could actually see dead bodies of people who were shot in cold blood and were left lying there like animals. Furthermore, some images presented the poverty and struggles of the lo-cals which left a lasting impression on all the visitors.
THE INTERIOR:
The interior by itself is very aesthetically pleasing with its simple yet modern look. We should also mention that the art is changed every week and some other artist’s work is put on display. The overall atmosphere of the place is rather grim, espe-cially with all the dark features which accentuate the current theme of the exhi-bition.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
The gallery is the best place for art lovers as well as youth. The art presented there is not the typical art we are used to, it is contemporary and attempts to educate the audience on important events in the past. On the whole, it would appeal to all ages due to its unique content.
THE CURRENT THEME:
When we were visiting the gallery, the artist presented was Letizia Battaglia, who was an Italian photographer and photojournalist. Many of her photos document Sicilian life; however, she is best known for her work on the Mafia. She took nu-merous exciting photos, some of which we had the chance to observe. Her photos don’t represent the beauty of life, quite the opposite, they present life as it is with all its downsides. She clearly tried to demonstrate what life looked like in the time of the Mafia without holding back. Additionally, the majority of her photos are black and white, with a few exceptions where she thought the color had a mean-ing, so she made them colorful.
MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE:
Her unique approach and way of work were the most memorable features which is why looking at her art is the most enjoyable part of the visit. Moreover, the curator’s explanations made the whole experience even more memorable.
CONCLUSION:
The most valuable part of the whole ITS experience was certainly the ac-quisition of general knowledge about art. Not only that, we learned about the history and the culture of Sicily, which made us realize how lucky we are to live in this free country without oppression. I believe that the whole excursion, in general, doesn’t require any additional work or improvement as I absolutely loved it and would definitely visit the gallery again.
